International Nurses Day – John Schofield Wakefield Hospital

May 12, 2024

THE ART OF NURSING

With Evolution Healthcare

At Evolution Healthcare we couldn’t be prouder of our exceptionally talented team – and the backbone of that team are our wonderful nurses.

Like us, they’re continuing to ensure excellence in the health and wellbeing of the people in our care. That’s why, to celebrate International Nurses Day, we’d love to introduce you to John Schofield.

John’s an ICU nurse and our Nurse Educator at Wakefield Hospital in Wellington, and it comes as no surprise to us that he talks about ‘the art of nursing’.

“There is an intuitive, ‘felt’ aspect to caring for people that makes nursing a real art. For me it’s just as important as understanding the medical science of nursing.

“To have a role that balances these two domains is a unique specialty to being a nurse,” says John.

As a Nurse Educator, John takes that art of nursing to another level. His role involves supporting fellow nurses in their training so they can do their jobs and feel good about it.

“Looking after fellow colleagues is just as important as patient care. It’s also something that helps ensure that the patient care level is maintained.

“It’s special to be in a position that gives back to the profession as well,” says John, who considers his ICU team as a family that understands each other’s challenges and strengths.

“You know what your peers need because you experience it as well.”

Wakefield Hospital’s smaller team size also provides John with opportunities to collaborate alongside colleagues from several different disciplines.

“It is very inspiring to talk to nurses with different expertise, or who see things differently,” says John. “You get familiar with other people’s skills, and you can tap into that knowledge.”

Working at Evolution Healthcare has also given John more professional freedom. He says being part of a team involved in specialties that vary from cardiothoracic to gender plastics is very inspiring.

“The opportunity to connect across Evolution Healthcare’s many scopes of service are certainly a highlight of being a nurse here.”

Evolution Healthcare is a leading provider of healthcare services in NZ. Our group has six hospitals, four specialist day hospitals, a maternity hospital, and a range of specialist health and wellbeing and rehabilitation services.
