Our Wakefield Hospital redevelopment is a significant investment in the Wellington community, with over $166 million committed to substantially redevelop the campus. Due for completion later this year, this $166m project will be home to a 37-bed inpatient ward, 10 ICU/HDU beds, two cardiac cath labs, seven operating theatres, recovery areas, two endoscopy suites and the reception for our day admissions area.
The facility has been designed to the latest seismic codes and standards, making Wakefield one of the safest hospitals in New Zealand with the use of base isolators. Our new hospital will provide central New Zealand with access to some of the most advanced medical services and treatment in the country, using the latest medical technologies.
Provision has been made for additional inpatient beds, an additional operating theatre, and more endoscopy suites. Plus, there’s space for another 32 beds and increased consultant space, ensuring flexibility and readiness to meet future needs. When completed, Wakefield Hospital will not only provide access to cutting-edge medical services and technologies but also position us to deliver unparalleled healthcare and excellence to all those in the central North Island.

Our Wakefield Hospital redevelopment is a significant investment in the Wellington community, with over $166 million committed to substantially redevelop the campus.
From breaking ground in June 2019, Wakefield Hospital has undergone a significant transformation with the demolition of multiple buildings and rebuilding its Specialist Centre, a six-storey facility designed to the highest standards.
Stage one of Wakefield’s development was completed July 2021 and sees the Specialist Centre services – Specialist Centre, Gastroenterology Centre, Heart Centre, Pacific Radiology, Preassessment rooms, and Mojo Cafe now operating.
Commencing second half of 2021, stage two will see five levels built which will be home to 37-bed inpatient ward, 10 ICU/HDU beds, cardiac cath lab, seven theatres and recovery areas, an endoscopy suite, reception and day of admissions, and much more across four levels. A fifth level shelled for future growth and expansion will be ready to fit-out, anticipating to meet demand for additional healthcare services in the region.
Hawkins Construction is the lead contractor for both stage one and stage two of Wakefield Hospital redevelopment.
