Wakefield Hospital expands its world-class healthcare services with the most modern and safest private hospital building, celebrated today with the grand opening of the first stage of the entire redevelopment. |
From breaking ground in June 2019, Wakefield Hospital has undergone a significant transformation with the demolition of multiple buildings and rebuilding its Specialist Centre, a six-storey facility designed to the highest standards. The state-of-the-art facility provides access for patients across the Wellington region and lower North Island from consultation services with leading specialists across many disciplines including Wakefield Specialist Centre – home to many private group practices and specialists, Wakefield Heart Centre, Gastroenterology at Wakefield, through to advanced imaging services managed by Pacific Radiology, and a café, to name a few. With significance, Wakefield Hospital is being rebuilt with base isolators and accelerometers all designed to exceed the latest seismic codes and standards. |
“The inclusion of base isolators to our hospital assures our community that we can continue to operate and provide services without interuption should we experience a major earthquake,” says Sue Channon, Chief Executive Officer. The second stage of Wakefield Hospital’s redevelopment will see additional buildings demolished, including halving the current hospital building, making way for the rebuild of our future hospital. “It is an exciting time for Wakefield Hospital staff and the Wellington community. Over the past two years, they have watched the first stage development, and now they will see the new, premium hospital within stage two starting very soon,” says Ms Channon. |
Aaron Hockly of Vital Healthcare Property Trust (owner of Wakefield Hospital infrastructure) said “We are delighted to have partnered with Evolution Healthcare to redevelop and upgrade Wakefield Hospital. Among other measures, the base isolation system will help ensure this hospital continues to serve the community well into the future. Completion of stage 1 is a significant milestone for Vital’s unitholders, most of whom are based in New Zealand, and Wellington’s healthcare system. This is the fourth development Vital has delivered in partnership with Evolution demonstrating the importance of our relationship. We look forward to delivering the balance of this project together over coming years.” |
Ms Channon says, “Evolution Healthcare prides itself on investing in the most advanced and sophisticated medical technology to support our specialists in the provision of superior patient care and outcomes, Wakefield hospital will take private healthcare to a new level in New Zealand. “In partnership with Vital Healthcare, over 130 million dollars is being invested into the substantial redevelopment of Wakefield, all whilst maintaining a fully operational hospital throughout the construction period. We aim for the new Wakefield Hospital tobe completed and fully operational at the end of 2023.” |
